Kumbh Mela is one of the most holy festivals celebrated across India. About Kumbh Mela
There is a legend that revolves around the celebration of this massive Indian mela (fair). The story says that hen Lord Indra was serving his penance; he had mistakenly dropped the holy nectar in four cities, as he was being chased by the other Gods and Goddess for the pot of the holy nectar. Then these four pure cities namely (Haridwar, Ujjain, Nasik and Allahabad) the festivals started to happen.
The astrological calculation: Maha Kumbh Mela is held when planet Jupiter enters Aquarius and the Sun enters Aries.
Kumbh Mela at Haridwar
Kumbh Mela (fair) is held in Haridwar on the Har ki Pauri ghat. This Ghat is located on the banks of the holy river Ganga. During this Kumbh Festival, thousands of pilgrims from across India take a dip in the holy Ganga water in order to clean their past sins. This fair includes long Hindu pujas, bathing in the Ganga water and worshipping at Hindu temples. This Festival was last held in the year 2010, the next Kumbh Festival at Haridwar will be held in the year 2022. At Haridwar the main attractions are long devotional singings, feeding of holy men, Hindu priests, women, and poor people of all form.
Kumbh Mela - What to Do
During the Kumbh Festival at Haridwar a massive crowd comes on the Har-ki-Pari Ghat and many religious and commercial camps are set up. The main rituals during this Pilgrims is to light a diya (lamp) and send it afloat on the Ganga and make a wish, and then this wish is believed to come true . There are four main ghats in Haridwar - Har Ki Pauri Ghat, Asthi Parvi ghat, Subhash Ghat and Gau ghat.
